India’s 1st Air-conditioned local-train to start service on 25th December, in Mumbai

The fare of an AC journey ticket would price around 1.3 times the standard fare of a 1st-class ticket.

Mumbai: India’s 1st air-conditioned local train will hit on the rail between Churchgate and Virar on December 25th, this year. The senior officials (Western Railway) said the 12-coach EMU train’s 1st stretch begins at 2.10 pm amid Andheri and Churchgate on the Christmas day.

The local train transported to City from the ICF (Integral Coach Factory), Chennai, in first-half of 2015. After a 2-long-year of trials at the train-sheds in Mumbai, the AC-local-train now being introduced to service on Monday (December 25th, 2017). “These services will substitute 12 local-train EMUs that are running on a daily basis, and therefore, can equalize the total number of suburban services to ‘1,355’,” said by a Chief Public Relations Officer, WR.

It shall be the 1st train with an automatic-door facility in the Mumbai suburban system. The cumulative capacity of the train is 5,964 – a potential of 1,028 seatings & 4,936 standings. 8 out of 12 will run between Churchgate and Virar, covering Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Bhayander and Vasai Road stations. Furthermore, 3 high-speed-service trains will ply between Churchgate and Borivali, covering Mumbai Central, Dadar, Bandra and Andheri stations. The last one will run from Mahalaxmi to Borivali and stop at all stations to cover most of the passengers. These 12-AC-EMU trains won’t run on weekends due to the maintenance work that needs to be done on a weekly basis, officials said.

“An AC-EMU train will be set on platform no. 5 at Mumbai Central main station for an illustration to present in front of commuters in the morning on Christmas Day. The illustration will stimulate, educate and familiarize the features of the train,” Official added.

The first and last coaches of the AC-EMU reserved only for ladies, whereas seven seats in the second and eleventh coach for senior citizens and 10 seats in the fourth and seventh coaches for physically-disabled passengers. For safety inside coaches, a finite number of RPF (Railway Protection Force) constables will be distributed to each coach. Technicians for instant-technical-service and hands-on announcements are some added benefits that will give passengers ease-of-travel on the AC-EMU train.

The fare includes the surcharge of MUTP (Mumbai Urban Transport Plan), and GST (Goods and Services Tax) levied from each passenger & shown separately on the ticket.

Though, passengers get charged 1.2 times of the 1st-class ticket in the first 6-month period.

“For instance, if the local-train fare is Rs. 180 from Churchgate to Virar, an AC-EMU travel will cost a passenger approximately about Rs. 216. The fare will later increase to about 1.3 times of the current ticket-fare or based on fare calculation model at that time.” “Surcharge of MUTP and GST levied accordingly on the total fare,” a senior railway official said.

Weekly, Biweekly & Monthly season-ticket charges for the AC train will cost 5-10 times of that of a local train. These fares also include Surcharge & GST.

What Safety Steps Implemented on AC-EMU train..!

    • Passenger-alarm implication light in all coaches
    • Emergency Talk-to-Driver unit to interface with train operator/guard during emergency situations.
    • Emergency ladders for fast-evacuation in case of emergency.
    • Fire extinguisher with directions to move-away fire-related instances.
    • Ease-of-communication facility from train operator and guard cab to all coaches connected.

“We’ll promote ‘eco-friendly’ mode of travel. It will also bring revenue for the division,” a superior WR official said.
